questions and answers

Dear disability doctor,

I am in perfect health, and I have never been around a person with a disability. I just got a new job, and have a disabled co worker What should I do? Signed, ignorant,

Dear ignorant,

The first step when wanting to learn something new, is to admit that you do not know it. I would give you a thumbs up, you are doing just that. Here is what to do. with out being overly pushy become a friend to that person. Do not try to be overly helpful, and just treat that person, like you would treat any one else.
For in spite of some ajustments they have to make, they have the same dreams, desires and goals that you have.

I'm sure the person sees your uneasiness. There's no reason to pretend it doesn't exist. Just be honest and state the facts. Maybe something like.....I haven't been around a disabled person before, so I'm sorry I seem uncomfortable. I know I can get over it and I am looking forward to getting to know you.

I work in group homes and found this works. (www.blog.grouphomesupport.com)

Don’t react the way in which he feels ashamed or uncomfortable of being disabled. Some general logics can help out in avoiding the improbability of how the office colleague will communicate with the co-workers with disabilities. There are many different types of workers and this makes it important for us to realize that we are not different and more or less alike when most of the time we are in search of the same experience in our line of work. A work place is a team work so employees should not overlook a colleague as they feel bumpy with their disability.
